Goals

The primary goals of the group will be

  1. to help foster the learning of web development at Skule
  2. to cooperatively develop some kick-ass Skule-related web applications.

Learning

The group will perform the educational aspect by acting as a support group and accumulating useful resources (in the form of a wiki, or on this google group, for example). Some introductory presentations will be given over the next two months, chiefly to explain the very basics of web-dev and expose members to what is needed and why (ex. what is HTML? what is Ajax? how is MVC organized? etc.) The actual learning and practice of the concepts will be individual - because it's insanely boring to watch someone code during a lecture. Later on, we may continue with some “awesome tips and tricks” presentations. The opportunity for practice will be primarily through being involved with a project (see below). These should be great experiences for both beginner and more advanced members - learning the coding/design skills is one thing, but learning to work together collaboratively is another challenge altogether! (and great practice for the real-world)

Development

To accommodate many members, along with their varying skills and tastes, several projects will be started. Each of the projects may be developed using a different language and framework. The decision as to which language or framework to use will rely on the subgroups for each project and their respective leaders.

Each project will have at least one project leader, whose appointment will be based on merit (ie. experience and dedication). These leaders will be chosen by the respective subgroup members (with some oversight provided by Raf).
